Happy Hump Day!
I was updating our website to include some information about nutrition and to highlight that is one of the areas we coach when it dawned on me, I need to send this information to you. Not because I think you need a nutrition coach, but to provide some added support and affirmation. To also shed a little bit of light as to why tacking our diets can be so damn challenging!
I share a personal story at the end, so please read to the bottom if you want to read it. Or you could just skip the middle and get right to my story. Jk. Don't do that. Read the middle.
Here it is!
The Importance Of Nutrition
"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food - Hippocrates
When it comes to nutrition, for many people words such as "diet", "fat loss" and "bland healthy eating" may come up. In reality, nutrition is what we're consuming to nourish our bodies. The exact definition is - the process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth.
When we put it that way, it seems a little simpler, but now we're confronted with the question - "Am I obtaining the food necessary for my health and growth or am I just going through the motions?"
It's very to easy to become reactive when it comes to food and one's health. Everything else is more of a priority, especially for us women. Food becomes the thing we do because we have to. Whatever is the most convenient and doesn't taste too bad is what we're eating. Who has time to cook or prep food when we have work, kids, partners and slew of other obligations?
I get it. But we have to think about nutrition. We have to make sure we're eating a variety of plant foods with different colors to ensure we're getting the proteins, carbohydrates, fats, fiber, water, vitamins and minerals we need. Whew that's a lot! Not just for survival, but for optimal health. I don't know about you, but I love having energy now. I love being able to sleep well. And I want to be running and jumping well into my seventies. Are you feeling good every single day or at least most days?
With the rate of obesity related deaths, autoimmune diseases and other preventable illnesses, there is no better time than NOW to focus on eating better and for your body. Remember, just because you aren't sick, does not mean you're healthy. By the time the body has a heart attack, it was already living with heart disease.
Here at Strong 4 Pole, we pride ourselves on really working with members through education and small changes. We are firm believers in the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) approach. We provide our members and our community constant events and educational blog posts on nutrition with immediate implementable action steps for fast yielding results. For our members specifically, we work on their habits, making small adjustments to last a lifetime, allowing the palette to change and the body to adapt, all the while providing constant support and limitless 1 on 1 attention.
Change of any kind does not come easy, but when it comes to one's diet, it is especially difficult, due to upbringings, modern day marketing, varied emotions and so much more. We believe with a steady support team and accountability system, anyone can be successful in transforming to an even better version of themselves, choosing foods that support and love them back.
My nutrition journey...
I use to eat terribly! It is how I gained way over 25lbs in college. Freshmen 15 came and then kept on coming.
Even after I stopped eating meat, which was for spiritual reasons, my eating habits had not changed, therefore my body did not change.
It took me going vegan, exercising on a daily basis to become what I am today. I went from nachos, sugary cereals, eggs with cheese, muffins or whatever was in the fridge for breakfast to smoothies, old fashioned oats, fruit bowls, quinoa bowls or avocado whole grain toasts for breakfast instead.
I stopped drinking alcohol, munching on chips for snacks, staying up late watching TV. I started ending my day with whole plant based foods, maybe some push ups and pull ups and getting 7-8 hours of sleep as often as possible. I began reading ingredient lists, paying attention to what was going in my body. I became proactive.
It wasn't easy initially. I craved everything in the world, especially sugar and fat. I just kept looking at my family, who are riddled with obesity related diseases - high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, Vertigo, Sleep Apnea, Breast Cancer, Cirrhosis. Even cousins starting at age 30. I knew
I wanted a different life. I also knew I had no excuse. Either I acted like everyone else and got all their same diseases or I make a change and pave a life less traveled; a life of abundant energy, lean muscles, vitality and health!
I chose the latter. 4 years of health and I'm not looking back. I've slimmed down I've gotten rid of my health insurance because I'm hardly ever sick, I sleep deeply and I'm stronger than I've ever been.
What did you choose? Or what are you going to choose?
